Bahamas’ Harbour Island Honeymoons

Your inside guide to a perfect Caribbean honeymoon on Bahamas' most gorgeous Out Island

Iconic blush-colored sands. Luxury resorts and low-key inns. Delectable seafood restaurants and authentic Caribbean eats served roadside. For an area that’s only three miles long and a half-mile wide, Bahamas’ Harbour Island is a little piece of paradise for any couple on their honeymoon.

Where To Stay:

PINK SANDS RESORT

The lushly landscaped Pink Sands Resort is a posh, yet surprisingly understated, haven set on the bluff overlooking the beach. Twenty-five cozy-cool cottages (our honeymoon go-to: Glass Window), with attached wood-planked decks, are sprinkled across the vast 20-acre retreat, providing absolute privacy—ocean view rooms even have their own personal paths right down to the sand.

CORAL SANDS

For a splurge, nab one of Coral Sands’ (Pink Sands’ sister property) new as-close-to-beachfront-as-you-can-get cottages. High-ceilinged, airy and set away from the main resort area for ultimate seclusion, the colonial-style digs feature their own steps to the beach and unbeatable views of the aquamarine ocean.

THE DUNMORE

After finding itself with new owners last year, The Dunmore underwent a complete revamp, shedding its previously stuffy façade and emerging a charming (and more laid-back) hideaway with some of the friendliest staff on the island. Sixteen sophisticated beach-style cottages, spread across the beautifully manicured property, are outfitted with bamboo details, ikat-printed accents and seriously comfy king beds.

THE LANDING

Circa 1800, Southern plantation-esque The Landing is the island’s best affordable option. A stand-alone cottage (with a sexy tree-lined outdoor shower) plus 12 pared-down rooms, housed in three buildings, offer a quiet respite in the middle of town. No TVs, no phones, handmade four-poster beds wrapped with gauzy white curtains and a front porch perfect for snuggling while watching the sun go down make this quaint spot an ideal bayside choice.

Where To Eat:

Though the restaurants at The Landing and Rock House hotel are touted as some of the best on the island (and are definitely worth a try), hit up Aquapazza, run by two Italian expats, if you’re looking for a reprieve from Bahamian food, or in the very least a spectacular marina view. Or indulge in the locally caught seafood Pepperpot at Pink Sands’ intimate Garden Terrace Restaurant, just inside the property’s entrance.

Also not to be missed is lunch-only Sip Sip, a lively lime green and electric blue house that serves scrumptious local flavor-infused fare on an outdoor porch with dazzling ocean views. Try the jerk pork burger or lobster quesadilla blackboard specials, if on offer, accompanied by a very rummy Rum Punch. On the bay side of the island, stop by local fave Queen Conch. The 16-year-old family-run establishment serves the freshest conch salad (and only conch salad) around for just $10 per heaping bowlful. Watch it being hauled in right around back of the roadside stand and chopped before your eyes then tossed with onions, tomatoes and hot pepper. And as an arrival or departure quick nibble, try the dockside Shack for some island staples like cracked conch or conch fritters. (Note: Sip Sip is closed on Tuesdays; Queen Conch is closed both Wednesdays and Sundays.)

What To Do:

When you aren’t lounging on Harbour Island’s spectacular Pink Sands Beach (a strand so serene you’ll doze off with a smile on your face), rent a golf cart and go exploring. While it might seem touristy, it’s not—the majority of people on the island, locals included, drive golf carts—and it’s too much fun not to. Head down to Romora Bay Resort & Marina’s aptly named Sunsets Bar & Grille one evening for a Technicolor treat (romorabay.com); catch some live music on Sunday nights while enjoying a signature Goombay Smash (a delicious coconut rum, apricot brandy and pineapple juice concoction) at Valentines Resort & Marina (valentinesresort.com); or try your hand at creating your own Caribbean dishes at a one-and-a-half-hour, hands-on cooking class with Executive Chef James Van Dyke at Pink Sands Resort ($95 per person, minimum of two people). Or best of all, do nothing but soak in the exquisite beauty of the surroundings, hand in hand with your new hubs.
