You’ve been getting your nails done bimonthly at the same salon since college, and you couldn’t trust your tried-and-true manicurist more if you were related. There is, however, one nail lacquer pro who ranks above all others: Essie Weingarten, the polish guru whose eponymous line’s (essie.com) incredibly fashion-forward colors are trumped only by its easy-to-use, long-lasting formula.

Though Essie’s collection is home to one of the most popular go-to bridal colors around (the ever-classic Ballet Slippers), the nail maestro herself steers brides toward what suits them best for the big day. “It’s not about what people say is right,” she says. “It’s about what’s right for you. What makes you feel beautiful and special? There’s no one way to do your nails.”

She advises brides to pick lacquer shades that complement either the bridesmaid dresses or floral arrangements. “Rich browns, plums or reds can be a lovely statement,” she recommends.

Nail Trends

As far as spicing up a traditional wedding look, Weingarten has a few tricks. “Instead of a classic French manicure, we’re noticing French manicures in color and reverse French manicures with a half-moon painted on the bottom of the nail near the cuticle and a light color on top,” she says.

She recommends a rounded square nail shape that follows the cuticle line for the most chic, timeless manicure, and says that even traditional brides can depart from the tried-and-true on their big day. “Traditionalists can choose colors that feel timeless,” she says. “Fishnet Stockings or Wicked are classics and a different twist for brides.”

Daring Color

For more daring brides, let the season guide you. Rich, velvety shades are truly lush and gorgeous for a fall or winter wedding. “Limited Addiction, a wine-colored red, and Little Brown Dress of Velvet Voyeur would look lovely on any bride,” suggests Weingarten.

And on your toes, the sky’s the limit. “You can prepare for your honeymoon destination with tropical shades, which work great on nails and toes,” she adds. “Shades like Island Hopping, Bermuda Shorts or Watermelon are wonderful for any beach or island vacation.”
