From the quest for the perfect dress to flawless hair and makeup, your wedding day is probably the closest you’ll get to truly being red carpet ready. So why not take a page from the pros? Fashionablebride.com talked to LA-based celebrity hairstylist Billy Lowe (billylowe.com), who has styled A-listers like Ellen DeGeneres and Debra Messing, for tips on how to achieve some of Hollywood’s most coveted styles.
Blake Lively
Loose, Wavy Locks
“This is really great for that sexy, come-touch-me hair,” says Lowe. Work with freshly-washed or day-old hair, being careful not to over-condition. Apply a volumizing serum like Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray ($25; bumbleandbumble.com), or shaping mousse like Frédéric Fekkai Coiff Strong Hold Volume Mousse ($23; saks.com), using a large paddle brush to evenly distribute product; blow-dry smooth on high heat, medium speed. Working in 1- to 2-inch sections, wrap your hair around your finger, and clip to scalp area. Once the whole head is dry, let hair set for 10 to 15 minutes, misting with a light hold aerosol hair spray—Lowe recommends Lamaur’s Vita/E Hair Spray ($5.50; sallybeauty.com). When hair is completely cooled, remove clips and shake loose.
Agyness Deyn
Hip, Super-Short Crop
“This look has an air of mystery and romance, but requires extra care based on face shape and body type,” warns Lowe, who recommends consulting a stylist before going short. After washing, blow-dry hair smooth sans product, following it up with a mattifying clay—we love Sebastian Craft Clay ($19; rickysnyc.com)—to define the hair.
Katie Holmes
Stick Straight Short Bob
“Especially for bridal, we want to see facial expressions and character. I love that one soft tuck behind the ear—it really opens up the face,” says Lowe of his favorite look. Apply a dime-sized amount of silicone smoothing serum like Frédéric Fekkai Silky Straight Ironless Smooth Finish Serum ($23; spacenk.com) and blow-dry straight. Finish with a light hold aerosol hair spray to tame flyaways. Lowe advises brides to consider how their hair will react at the venue’s environment; a humidity-free setting works best with this look.
Naomi Campbell
Covet-Worthy Bangs
“It really accentuates the eyes. It’s soft, romantic, sultry, everything in one,” says Lowe, who stresses that the key here is to keep bangs softly chiseled and not at a hard line. Use a silicone serum or a light hold styling crème—try Kiehl’s Stylist Series Crème with Silk Groom ($18; kiehls.com) before blow-drying smooth with a large paddle brush. Define texture at the end with a light shaping wax like Aveda Light Elements Shaping Wax ($24; aveda.com)—again, staying away from anything shiny or sticky.
